Life
A moment to unwind in the city.
Life in Negishi, Taito Ward, is an old-school kissaten offering made-to-order sandwiches on soft bread, crisp toast, and homestyle pork curry seasoned with a hint of soy sauce.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Cut from a fresh loaf for every order, the sandwiches at Life are well worth seeking out. Guests can enjoy the bread in its pillowy, untoasted state or have it crisped up as a toasted sandwich. Inside rest gentle combinations of classics such as egg, ham, cucumber, and tomato. Tender and melt-in-the-mouth, the bread carries a pleasant lightness whether sipped alongside iced coffee or a hot house blend.
When a hearty lunch is called for, the proprietor prepares a pork curry rice learned while training at a longstanding shop in Yurakucho. The roux, touched with a subtle note of soy sauce, is generously studded with tender pork and onions. Mild in heat yet savory and reassuring, it arrives with a small salad for a deeply satisfying plate. The weekday lunch rotation also brings its own treats: pork loin sourced from the butcher across the street glazed into ginger pork, or a richly seasoned ketchup Napolitan pasta intended to be scooped up alongside toast.
The morning starts with a set centered on thick, chewy toast served alongside scrambled eggs and salad. Furnished with tables and a counter, the intimate dining room holds a retro, comforting calm where eating alone feels entirely at ease. Payments are cash only.
